Sustainability and Replication: a long term vision

Having delivered over 70 Teens & Toddlers projects to 1500 at risk and vulnerable young people, and the positive results coming out of the research and evaluation programme, Teens and Toddlers is now offering a parallel training and recruitment programme for Local Authorities. Endorsed by DCSF the Sustainability Replication programme ensures that programmes can be maintained over time with the transfer of the programme to local management and fully trained local staff.

All Teens and Toddlers programmes are supported by a quality assurance schedule and an accreditation process and qualification for all successful Local Authority Trainee Facilitators. (Youth Work Diploma, Level 3)

Local Authorities benefit from:

  • training for up to ten nominated individuals to competently and professionally set up and deliver Teens and Toddlers programmes.
  • delivery of two full Teens and Toddlers projects in the relevant Borough during the training process, enough for 60 teenagers to participate in.

Teens & Toddlers is both a teenage pregnancy prevention and sexual health programme and a youth development project. Each and every Teens & Toddlers project conveys the importance and the value of postponing pregnancy, providing the young person with, an Accredited National Award (NCFE) and an alternative vision of what is possible for their lives.

Although a preventative programme, Teens and Toddlers asserts that the best way to achieve a reduction in youth exclusion and teenage pregnancy is to give young people a new and positive experience of themselves, raise their self esteem and aspiration, and help them develop alternative goals which re-engage them with their education.

Additional benefits include:

  • lower teenage pregnancy rate, resulting in significantly reduced financial burden on Social Services, social benefits, NHS and housing costs.
  • teenagers staying in the educational system longer, thereby raising their employment possibilities.
  • mental health improvements through increased emotional literacy - skills of self-reflection, self-management, relationship to others and relationship to society.
  • development of future parenting skills, breaking generational patterns of disadvantage.
  • crime prevention development work through anger management: work with self-valuing and self-assertion, awareness of choice, personal responsibility and future life goals.
  • citizenship skills through multi-cultural participation and the programme's promotion of an appreciation of difference and improved social behaviour.
  • community engagement through working in, and contributing to, local nurseries and support for nursery staff.
  • provision of future work for local people.
